Apollo and Daphne by Bernini.

We spent most of the day in the great museum the Villa Borghese. More great art per square inch than even the Saatchi's own collection.

Much of the time was spent looking at Bernini's "Apollo and Daphne." Apollo is out to rape her, to save herself, she turns into a laurel tree. Fingers morphing into leaves hewn from marble.

Way better than a Laurel and Hardy tree.

When our kids were small we were all in The Vatican drawing a statue called Lacoon.
My wife said it looked a bit like a Michelangelo.
I checked and found it was actually Roman, and it was already 1,500 years old when Michelangelo first drew it.
When you're in Rome you understand why it was called the Renaissance.
It was the cultural birth of the rest of the world, but the REbirth there.
